What Does the Attorney General Do?

  • Head of the United States Department of Justice. The DOJ is responsible for enforcing the law on a federal scale.The DOJ (Department of Justice) has over 110,000 employees and a budget of over 27 billion dollars. This is no small task and not simply limited to law enforcement.

  • Advises the President of Supreme Court appointments. Has enormous say in future judicial appointments on the federal level.

Who was the Past Attorney General? 

  • Loretta Lynch: Enormous advocate of Civil Right.
  • Served on prosecution case of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was sexually assaulted by the police. By all means, a great attorney general who focused on the progress of civil rights in this nation.

Who is Jeff Sessions?

  • A US Senator from Alabama, one of the most Republican states in the nation.
  • A close confidant of Trump who was supposedly in the running for the No. 2 spot, and advised Trump on the eventual selection of Mike Pence

What has been his track record?

  1. Immigration: Has opposed nearly every immigration reform bill in the Senate that has fought for a path for illegal citizens to come into this country or grant amnesty (an official pardon that the government gives to those that have committed political offenses, i.e. illegally immigrating into this country)
  2. Womens’ Rights: Has opposed expanded protections for women; opposed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which would have offered expanded support and programs to domestic abuse victims.
  3. Gay Marriage: Has advocated for a Constitutional amendment (the Federal Marriage amendment) barring gay marriage, which would have permanently rendered marriage an union between one man and one woman on a federal scale.
